Cheap-to-run and easy-to-drive, the Ford KA satisfies many drivers’ needs – which is easier said than done, especially when you consider the balance of performance, efficiency and affordability needed. Now replaced with the five-door KA+, you can get your hands on a used KA for great value.
What you need to know about the Ford KA
It will have taken Ford a while to deliver the blend of power and practicality in their engines. It won’t take you long to choose an KA engine though, as there’s just one 1.2-litre eight-valve petrol. It delivers a lively enough performance, although the fuel consumption has been surpassed by rivals with three-cylinder petrol engines and turbochargers.
You’ll have more decisions when it comes to the trim and spec levels, including Studio, Style, Style+ and Zetec and three special customisation themes. The mid-range Zetec – which we drove – gives you a good blend of kit and value.
What you need to watch out for
To dart through traffic, the KA’s gearbox, steering and suspension are plenty. It’s most at home in towns and cities, with a 0-62mph acceleration in 13.4 seconds. Take it to the motorway and it feels out of its depth. But for general day-to-day driving, Ford’s well-judged suspension makes it comfortable and cuts out body lean. It’s a practical and sensible choice of car.
Top Gear says the new KA+ echoes the same sentiment too, serving its purpose as a budget five-door, and applaud Ford for delivering a perfectly decent sub-£10k city car, with more space for passengers and additional power. It’s acknowledged that fun is a bit of a distant memory, though. If you’re also wondering where the excitement is, you’ll have to look at the Fiesta.

Fun run-arounds don’t get much better than the KA. Whilst it’s true economy, comfort and performance could be improved – and are better on newer rivals – if you’re looking for an affordable way to get around town, it’s a good bet. Find models to suit you from Exchange & Mart today.
