Overview

The Audi TT driving experience is exhilarating, thanks to a progressive steering system that offers a sharp and direct feel, smart acceleration and adaptive dampers which reduce body lean. It’s also an all-rounder, capable of comfortable long-distance journeys and quick trips around town. What other keen drivers’ cars can you say that about? Not many.

What you need to know about the Audi TT

The TT more than delivers, with the latest generation truly placing the focus on driver fun. It weighs less than before and Audi have given it a new and adaptive chassis, as well as more power.

With the TT, you’re in control. You can choose from a selection of drive modes. If you feel like opening up on the roads, select dynamic to unleash all the power. Dial things down in efficiency mode to try and achieve the claimed 47.8mpg – we only reached low 40s.

Both the petrol and diesel offerings have impressive contenders. We’re huge fans of the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol with Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system, but the TDI Ultra diesel could be better-suited to someone doing more miles.

What’s more, Audi is known for top-notch materials and innovative tech. The TT was the first car to have Audi’s now-renowned virtual cockpit. Focusing on usability, it’s a fully-digital display positioned in front of the driver.

What to watch out for

There are few worries with the TT, as it’s one of the most well-reviewed Audi models, thanks to a combination of excellent comfort and exciting driving dynamics. It helps that the TT is also competitively priced and even reasonably spacious. For Top Gear, it’s the best real world sports car on sale.

Other options

  • BMW 2 Series
  • Mercedes SLC
  • Porsche 718 Cayman

Expert opinion

The allure of the Audi badge, and the seemingly unbeatable interior standards, is hard to ignore. The TT has steadily evolved into a modern performance machine, which is sure to thrill – even if the ride is still slightly too firm.

Why buy a used Audi TT with Exchange and Mart?

To many, the Audi TT is an aspirational bauble of aluminium detailing, casually oozing post-millennium European cool, effortlessly dripping with the Bauhaus architectural design cues popularised by Gropius in the 1930s. Others will see it as a grotesquely mutated Volkswagen Golf. Whichever camp you reside in, the Audi TT can't be ignored and it has proved an important model for Audi, not only as an image builder, but also as a sales winner in its own right. The sort of scares over its high-speed handling that would have severely dented the used values of many other cars barely caused a ripple on the TT's residual values when they surfaced in 1999. With approved modifications to cure this alleged instability at speed, the car is rock solid: without it's certainly lively.

About the Audi TT

If you want a pure feel-good car, that is slick, fun and won't prove to be financial suicide, a new Audi TT will be high on most shortlists. As a used buy, it makes slightly less sense, with low-mileage used cars often priced above new list prices. Another factor to bear in mind is that the TT's extreme styling may well date quickly, with a corresponding effect on used car residual values. Availability of sensibly priced cars is getting better with many buyers opting for parallel imports from Europe, driving the cost of used cars further downhill. You may have to search for your desired specification or colour but the payback comes the moment you drive one away.

Representative finance example

Borrowing £7,500 on a Hire Purchase agreement over 48 months, a representative APR of 18.5% and a deposit of £0.00, the amount repayable would be £216.89 a month, with a total cost of credit of £2,910.72 and a total amount payable of £10,410.72.
