10 Second Review

Top 'Rhino' versions of KGM's Musso pick-up continue to try and redefine the value proposition for customers in this segment and provide them with rugged but car-like transport. Attractions include a seven year warranty and the diesel powertrain's impressive combined payload and towing capacity. There's the option of a long wheelbase 'Long-bed' 'Rhino+' variant at the top of the range. If you're buying at the plush end of this sector, you probably won't have been considering a Musso. Perhaps you should.

Background

If you're looking for a pick-up truck plush enough to live with every day, as many owner-driver business users are, then you might have been a bit shocked by the asking prices of better-equipped versions of mainstream players in this segment. The KGM Musso has always been a more affordable choice, but its whiff of 'bargain basement' previously put plenty of would-be customers off.
Those people might like to look again at the updated version we look at here, which in its top 'Rhino' and 'Rhino+' forms gets the smarter, more angular styling and updated cabin we first saw in the all-electric Musso EV. These 'Rhino' models stick with KGM's familiar 2.2-litre diesel. Let's take a closer look.

Driving experience

Both Musso 'Rhino' models are powered by KGM's usual 2.2 litre e-XDi diesel engine, producing 202PS at 3,800rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1,400 to 2,800rpm. Paired with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain aims to deliver strong low-speed pulling power, refined everyday performance and the confidence required for towing, load carrying and demanding terrain.
Both 'Rhino' variants are equipped with selectable 4x4 and low range, allowing drivers to switch between 2WD high range, 4WD high range and 4WD low range depending on road, weather and off-road conditions. Hill start assist and hill descent control further support driver confidence, while the locking differential helps the vehicle regain traction on mud, snow and other slippery surfaces.
In 'Rhino' form, this KGM offers 245mm of minimum ground clearance, with a 30.9 degree approach angle and a 27.8 degree departure angle. The Rhino+ provides 248mm of minimum ground clearance, with a 30.6 degree approach angle and a 24.5 degree departure angle.
Towing strength remains one of Musso's defining attributes, with both 'Rhino' and 'Rhino+' models offering a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, supported by trailer sway control, rear-view camera, Clear Sight View and a 360-degree 3D surround view monitoring system.

Design and build

Like the Musso EV, these plusher 'Rhino' and 'Rhino+' versions of the Musso get a new angular front end look, with a redesigned front end and more commanding stance. Bold centre daytime running lamps, LED Projection Headlamps, LED clusters and a more robust-looking grille give this updated Musso a more confident presence, while 18-inch brushed chrome alloy wheels, silver side steps, black and silver roof rails, Rhino graphics and an embossed KGM tailgate aim, to reinforce its purposeful identity.
Like most double cab pick-ups, this KGM is a substantial thing, measuring over 5-metres in length. Inside, it all feels very plush, with Nappa leather upholstery and two 12.3-inch dash-top screens that are seamlessly joined. There's also plenty of cabin storage space.
In the back, there's more leg room than is usual in a double cab pick-up and because there's no central transmission tunnel, a third centre-seated occupant could fit in for shorter trips. Nice touches for the rear include dedicated mobile phone pockets and powered seat controls for the front passenger seat on the side of that seat bolster, so a passenger behind could easily push the front seat ahead forward for extra leg room if it that front seat is unoccupied. There's also a 'rear seat sleep' function which mutes the speakers in the back, allowing kids to more easily rest during night driving.

Market and model

Pricing for the Musso 'Rhino' starts from £38,995. It's £39,995 for the long-bed 'Rhino+' (the same, incidentally, as you'll pay for the almost identical-looking Musso EV).
Both 'Rhino' variants include premium Nappa leather seats, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats and automatic dual-zone air conditioning with dial controls and rear air vents.
A 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster sits alongside a 12.3-inch smart audio screen with TomTom navigation, wireless 'Apple CarPlay' and 'Android Auto'. Additional features include wireless phone charging, rear USB-C charging ports, DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel-mounted controls, smart key, push button start, remote key engine start, rain-sensing wipers and intelligent adaptive cruise control.
Both models feature high-strength-steel construction, an ultra-rigid Quad Frame, door impact beams, six airbags and a broad suite of smart safety systems. These include Electronic Stability Programme, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Anti-Lock Brake System, Traction Control System, Brake Assist System, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Change Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safety Exit Warning, hill start assist, hill descent control and Trailer Sway Control.
Customers can choose from a colour palette including Space Black, Marble Grey, Amazon Green, Marine Blue, Smoke Taupe and Grand White.

Practicalities and costs

Practicality is central to the Musso proposition, with the load bed designed to carry an entire Euro-pallet. The 'Rhino' version offers 1,011-litres of load bed capacity and a payload of 1,090kg, while the 'Rhino+' increases this to 1,262-litres and 1,200kg respectively, giving it the biggest pick-up load bed on the road by volume.
Both models are supported by a standard load bed liner, eight lashing hooks, a wide opening tailgate, LED load bed lamp and rear bumper corner steps, making loading, unloading and securing cargo easier in everyday working environments.
The load bed dimensions underline the model's working credentials, with 'Rhino' offering a 1,300mm load bed length and long-bed 'Rhino+' extending this to 1,610mm. Both models share a 1,570mm load bed width and 570mm depth, creating generous, usable space for tools, materials, equipment or leisure gear.
Both versions of this Musso can tow 3,500kg. The 'Rhino' delivers a gross train weight of 6,750kg, while the 'Rhino+' increases this to a segment-leading 6,900kg, helping customers tow heavy trailers while still carrying a substantial payload simultaneously. Fuel consumption is rated at 29.6mpg (combined) with 252g/km of CO2. Insurance is group 50D. As usual with KGM models, this one comes with an impressively complete five year 100,000 mile warranty.

Summary

The number of customers who can afford the tax levied on diesel-powered pick-ups in the UK is dwindling but KGM wants a bigger slice of the market that remains and these 'Rhino'-spec models look well placed to grow the Korean maker's segment share.
The angular new look has made this contender seem more modern, but more important is the fact that the revamped interior looks far more class-competitive. Some rivals still feel more complete, but you'll usually pay a lot more for them. Try one of these and you may feel that isn't necessary.
