BRANDS like Hyundai have made great strides in recent years in becoming very good at tempting buyers away from more established makes with their value-laden offerings.
And the 2015 Santa Fe 4x4 is no different.
To begin with, the new model is looking good, with a premium visage.
The interior doesn’t quite match that, with the materials falling a little short of a high-end feel, but everything is there and you get a lot for your cash.
The standard kit list is lengthy and includes 18in alloys, air con, all the safety gubbins, cruise control, power windows front and back, parking sensors at the back and lots more.
And there’s genuine off-road capability here, with downhill brake control, hill-start assist and self-levelling suspension indicating that the Santa Fe can handle the rough stuff too.
It’s a fairly simple range, with three trim levels and a choice between five and seven seats on each.
A 2.2 diesel is your only power choice, but that’s to be expected on this sort of car, and its 197ps makes for decent pulling power.
Mpg isn’t bad – we managed a reasonable mid-30s compared to the claimed 41-46 to the gallon, while CO2 is between 159-178g/km.
We drove Premium spec, which sits mid-range and adds dual-zone climate control, leather, the touchscreen sat nav system – which is a little outdated but does its job – parking camera and rear air con, among other things.
There are niggle with the sat nav, not least that the voiceover seemed to return every time the car was restarted, despite having turned it off, and the system as a whole could do with updating. But it functions well.
Top-spec Premium SE adds even more – bigger wheels, front parking sensors, keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof and more.
By the time you get here, you’ve certainly got a 4x4 that’s a serious contender.
