MICRA HATCHES PLAN TO RAISE A SMILE (Nissan Micra 2003-2010) 06/09/2010, By Iain Dooley checks out Nissan’s popular and extrovertly styled Micra

ENGINES – A modest collection of small capacity petrol engines (1.0, 1.2, 1.4) power the Micra, plus a 1.5-litre diesel unit. With the petrol units offering refined and surprisingly economical motoring, the diesel only makes sense if you regularly rack up the miles away from the city limits.


EXTERIOR – Don’t be fooled by the Micra’s left-field looks, this compact Japanese hatchback offers enough versatility to challenge its main rivals. That its appearance is bold and bright proves that urban runabouts don’t have to be dull, however.


INTERIOR – It might look a little wacky on the outside but Nissan’s Micra presents a more sensible face on the inside. The car’s solidly built cabin, ample space and supportive seats show how it should be done.


DRIVING – With a distinct bias towards ease of use, the Micra’s main controls offer plenty of assistance. The slightly raised driving position and excellent all-round visibility also help, while the willing yet refined engines round off this impressive package.


OWNERSHIP – It’s often said that a particular car is “painless” to own. Nissan’s Micra is one of those cars; easy to drive, inexpensive to run and boasting Germanic build quality. Practicality is boosted by a spacious cabin and useful boot.


WHAT TO LOOK FOR – With many of these cars used for short urban journeys, always check that everything is in good order. Evidence of regular servicing, clean engine oil, unmarked tyres and brakes that do their job are essential. Likewise, kerbed wheels, parking dents and a patchy service history should be frowned upon.


MODEL HISTORY
2003: Nissan launches radically styled new Micra. Choice of three and five door models plus modest collection of small capacity petrol and diesel engines. Manual and auto transmissions offered, along with good level of standard and optional equipment. Subtle facelifts punctuated the car’s lifecycle.


REASONS TO BUY – funky styling, solid construction, easy to drive and own, low running costs.


REASONS TO BEWARE – looks won’t appeal to everyone, not for keen drivers.
