The New Cars Coming This Summer

Skoda Kodiaq – April

You’ll have already heard a fair bit about the Skoda Kodiaq and it’s going on sale as we speak. This is a big one for Skoda – it’s the brand’s first large SUV, standing 4.70m long with seven seats.

The manufacturer claims that it’s the largest boot in its class and it’ll tow up to 2.5 tonnes. It introduces new driver assistance system to Skoda as well as new connectivity.

Five engines are on offer in all, coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox or a six or seven-speed DSG auto. Drive is either front wheel or all-wheel, giving the Kodiaq the ability to tackle a bit of the rough stuff if needed.

Given its VW underpinnings and the quality of Skoda’s range, the Kodiaq is sure to make an impact.

 

Kia Picanto – May

Kia’s little city car has been made since 2004 and this third generation brings it bang up to date – it looks great for a start, which is key in this image-conscious segment.

The South Korean firm says it’s gone for a bold new exterior, with which we’d agree, and a modern cabin, which will feature a ‘floating’ touch screen.

New in-car tech and connectivity includes Android and Apple smartphone integration and a wireless smartphone charger. The cabin is being hailed as quieter and more spacious, with Kia claiming the largest cargo capacity in its class.

It gets better safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, as well as a stronger body. Torque vectoring ensures better handling, says Kia, and this will also be the most powerful Picanto ever, with its first-ever turbo petrol engine joining the range in the latter part of this year, while the little 1.0-litre non-turbo engine will emit just 89g/km of CO2.

 

Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer – June

Another big step in Vauxhall’s purple patch, no doubt, the new Insignia Sports Tourer is 200kg lighter than before and offers 125 more litres of boot space.

Practicality is centre to its offering, with 40/20/40 foldable seats available, while that boot is also nearly 10cm longer. It’s on a whole new architecture and comes with all-wheel-drive and a new eight-speed automatic gearbox is also available.

There will also be lots of tech and comfort stuff on board, including new LED matrix lighting, lane keep assist, head-up display, premium heated seats and a heated windscreen.

Range Rover Velar – July

For those looking for a more luxury offering, the new Range Rover Velar hits the roads in July.

Filling a gap that you never knew existed between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, the Velar is an all-new car. It debuts a new state-of-the-art infotainment system, which is no bad thing as Land Rover tends to lag behind a little in this department.

Land Rover says that a light and stiff body structure, which uses much aluminium, makes for top-notch performance, agility and efficiency. There will be six engines, from the 180PS 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel to the somewhat potent 380PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine.

Air suspension is standard on all six-cylinder models for a seriously comfortable ride, we would wager.

And it’ll still do the business off-road, with an optional active locking rear differential available, along with terrain response, all terrain progress control, low traction launch, hill descent control and gradient release control.

Lots of clever gadgets to tackle the rough stuff, basically.

 

Ford Fiesta – September

Arriving in time for, maybe, an Indian Summer, is the next generation of Britain’s best-selling car.

Ford claims that it’s the most technologically advanced small car in the world. Quite a claim, then. The range has been expanded – with Ford giving its supermini the posh Vignale moniker seen on bigger models already.

There’ll also be an ST-Line sporty one, Titanium and an Active crossover. The new Fiesta will also be the first Ford with pedestrian detection and active park assist that will brake to stop low-speed bumps when parking.

It’ll also be the first Ford to feature a premium Bang and Olufsen sound system and it’ll get the SYNC 3 infotainment system with ‘floating’ touch screen. Ford says that refinement has improved to reduce road noise by seven per cent and there will also be a panoramic glass roof option.

Quite a list for a little car that’s come a long way.

Power will include the 1.0-litre petrol EcoBoost, with 140ps, as well as the Fiesta’s first high-power diesel. There’s also a new six-speed transmission and engine emissions will begin from 82g/km.

And for those who like their percentages, Ford says that new suspension and electronic torque vectoring control makes for 10 per cent better cornering grip and eight per cent better braking distances.
