Overview

When Fiat first launched its modern version of the classic 500 in 2007, the retro looks went down a treat. The revival of the original 1957 car surfed a wave of nostalgia and it became one of the go-to stylish city cars.

It’s been so popular Fiat have introduced a range of other models with the latest regeneration, including the Fiat 500C convertible, the Fiat 500L MPV and the Fiat 500X crossover.

What you need to know about the Fiat 500

Underneath the heritage look, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the Fiat 500. It’s an easy car to drive, which feels most at home in towns and cities. You’ve got great visibility and the light steering means you can nip around at ease.

It may lack thrills, but stealing the last parking space because no-one else can navigate their way in is always a bonus. For smooth city driving, the TwinAir two-cylinder turbo petrol is probably your best choice. It offers up a 0-62mph time of 11 seconds for the 85bhp version and 10 seconds for the 105bhp model – easily enough power to get off the mark from low speeds.

When you’re driving a Fiat 500, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how spacious the front feels. There are impressive digital displays too, especially in latest release. It’s no surprise the 500 typically appeals to a younger audience looking for the balance of style and affordability.

What you need to watch out for

Top Gear point out what we all don’t want to admit - the 500 looks wonderful where so many cars are drab. They even draw attention to how fun it is to drive, due to the fact it’s a relatively light hatch with a short wheelbase and plenty of power in the right spec.

You’ll have to be careful with the choice of trim, though, as some miss out desirable extras. Pop Star is a good choice.

The 500 remains a fun and stylish city car that’s evolved for modern needs. Check out our full review, and start browsing Fiat 500 models with Exchange & Mart today.

Why buy a used Fiat 500 with Exchange and Mart?

Fiat's cheeky little new-era 500 is fun, fashionable and frugal - and the Italian brand has never stopped trying to develop it. After being first launched in 2008, it was updated with TwinAir 0.9-litre petrol turbo power in 2011, then revised again three years later to create the 2014 to 2015 version we're going to examine here as a used buy. The 2014 model year changes brought buyers the option of a pokier 105bhp variant of the petrol TwinAir engine and there was a smarter TFT instrument display on top models, along with a trendy 'Cult' trim level. If you can stretch to a later Fiat 500 model, then it could well be a car from this era that you end up inspecting.

About the Fiat 500

To be honest, Fiat didn't need to do a whole lot with the 2014 model year changes to retain this 500 model's popularity. Like earlier examples of this car, this later version looks great, and was fun to drive. As for this updated version, well the interior improvements were welcome but of more importance was the addition to the range of the 105bhp TwinAir petrol engine. This bridged the gap between this car and the slightly more powerful small city runabouts that previously had often seen themselves as a class above this Fiat. Principally BMW's MINI.In fact, both versions of the TwinAir two cylinder petrol unit are a key part of this Fiat's appeal. The sound and eager response suit the car and though the quoted running cost returns are difficult to achieve in real-world motoring, this powerplant certainly makes the 500 a very cheap thing to run. Yes, this model remains pretty small inside, but then smallness is all part of the appeal. You'll appreciate that when zipping around town in one.In summary then, this car remains as likeable as ever. Choosing a 'fashionable' little used runabout can often be a risk. Here though, is one you can enjoy without a worry.

Representative finance example

If your borrow amount is £7,000 with a deposit of £1,000, a selected term of 48 months, at a representative APR of 17.9% (fixed) and an annual fixed interest rate of 17.9%, you would pay £171.83 per month. Total charge for credit would be £2,247.84 and total amount repayable is £8,247.84.
